The best time to visit South America can vary depending on the specific countries and regions you plan to explore. South America's vast size and diverse geography mean that different parts of the continent have varying weather patterns. Note that South America's seasons are reversed from those in the Northern Hemisphere, summer corresponds to December through February.
Dry Season (December–March): The dry season is the ideal time to visit countries like Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela. Pleasant weather and minimal rainfall make it perfect for exploring, including the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador.
Summer (December–February): Peak tourist season in Patagonia, Argentina and Chile, the weather is warmest but it can be busy and prices are higher. Shoulder seasons (Sep–Nov & Mar–May) offer milder weather, fewer crowds and better value.
Dry Season (June–October): The best time to explore the Amazon in Brazil, Peru and Ecuador. The rainforest is less humid, rivers recede to reveal beaches and wildlife is far more accessible. Perfect for jungle adventures.
Dry Season (May–September): Ideal for trekking and visiting high-altitude destinations like Machu Picchu in Peru and the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. Be prepared for colder nights at high elevations and allow time to acclimatise.
Rio Carnival (February–March): If you want to experience the world-famous Rio Carnival in Brazil, plan your visit for February or March. Accommodation and prices will be higher, so book well in advance.
Coastal Regions (December–February): Coastal areas of Brazil, Chile and Uruguay have pleasant weather year-round, but the summer months are ideal for beach holidays. Highland destinations require acclimatisation regardless of when you visit.
