Luxury Collection
The Indian Ocean's Most Complete Island
Mark Twain famously wrote that Mauritius was made first, and then heaven was copied from it. It's a line that still resonates, the island has a quality of beauty that is at once lush and refined, wild and perfectly manicured, deeply tropical and yet somehow familiar in its comfort and ease. It is, in many respects, the most complete island destination in the Indian Ocean.
What distinguishes Mauritius from destinations like the Maldives or Seychelles is its depth, beyond the extraordinary beaches and turquoise lagoons, the island has genuine culture, extraordinary food, dramatic volcanic landscapes, sugar cane fields, and a warmth of character that owes something to its French, British, Indian, Creole, and Chinese heritage. You can base yourself at a world-class beachfront resort and barely leave, or you can explore the Black River Gorges, the Chamarel coloured earths, the tea plantations of the central plateau, and the street food markets of Port Louis. Either approach rewards you.
The north has the longest beaches and the most resort options. The east coast has a wilder feel and some exceptional properties. The south is dramatic and less developed. The west has the best sunsets and excellent watersports. Each corner of the island offers something different, and we'll help you find the right match for what you're looking for.

FAQs
May to December is generally considered the best time, dry, sunny, and with pleasant temperatures (24–28°C). May to September is cooler and drier, with July and August the coolest months (though still warm). October to December sees rising temperatures and humidity. January to April is the cyclone season, the risk is real, though cyclones often miss the island entirely, and prices during this period can be significantly lower. The east coast is more sheltered from the trade winds in winter; the west coast catches more sunshine in summer.
Each coast has its character. The north has the widest choice of resorts and the longest beaches, with a lively atmosphere and good snorkelling. The east is wilder, with some of the island's most prestigious resorts (Constance, Four Seasons, Shangri-La) and excellent conditions for watersports. The west faces the sunset, has sheltered lagoons, and some fine all-inclusive resorts. The south is dramatic and less developed, better for those wanting a quieter, more natural experience. We'll help you choose based on your priorities and the time of year.
No, UK passport holders do not require a visa to visit Mauritius for stays of up to 90 days. You simply need a valid passport, a return ticket, and proof of accommodation. Mauritius is one of the easiest Indian Ocean destinations for UK travellers in terms of entry requirements.
They're very different experiences, and the right choice depends on what you want. The Maldives offers the ultimate in overwater seclusion and coral reef snorkelling, but is essentially one resort on one island with limited opportunity for exploration. Mauritius has more variety: culture, food, landscapes, activities, and an island you can actually explore. It's typically better for families, more affordable, and more interesting for those who don't want to spend the entire holiday on the beach. For pure romantic escapism and the iconic overwater villa experience, the Maldives is hard to beat. For a richer, more varied holiday with exceptional beaches, Mauritius often wins.
